On the coast of historic Achaia in the north western Peloponnese, the Ionian Beach Hotel has 80 bungalows set in 10 acres of lush gardens leading directly onto a long sandy beach. Discover the sights of The Peloponnese & the beautiful Ionian islands

Within a short drive is the traditional fishing hamlet of Achaia and the market town of Kato Achaia. Notable excursions from the area include ancient Olympia, birth place of the Olympic Games. Also the city of Patras with its castle and well known Achaia Klaus wine museum. Further along the coast the new Rion bridge is one of the worlds longest suspension bridges linking the Peloponnese with the mainland and an ideal route to visit ancient Delphi. To the west are the Araxos and Metochi lagoons, protected wetlands of international repute.

Patras

This is the capital of the region and owes the name to Patreas, ancient King of the Achaians. It is the largest town in the Peloponnese and a major port, linking Greece with Italy and the Peloponnese with the Ionian Islands. The city extends from the shore up to the Castle, which was built on a hill in the upper city by Justinian about 551 BC to protect the area and its citizens. It is divided in two parts, the upper and the lower, whose layout, parks and plazas give it a definite distinction. The ancient conservatory, where many concerts take place in summertime. The Apollo Theater build in 1872, and planned by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller, is the oldest indoor theatre in Greeceand an architectural landmark of Patras. The Apollon Theatre is the main stage of the Patras Municipal and Regional Theatre Cmpany since 1988. The Tower of Achaia Clauss the first winery in Greece, was built in 1861 and until today produces some of the better known wines in Greece. The visitor can enjoy the lush gardens, the historic buildings and cellars and also taste some of the excellent wines of Achaia Claus. The Cathedral of Saint Andrew, the city’s patron saint, is a majestic church that rises above the lower city. The cathedral houses relics of St Andrew and the cross. Patras also possesses a fine archaeological museum, an art gallery and a printing museum. The old city, at the foot of the castle, still has a number of attractive neo classical houses, while the lower city has many old mansions, such as those now housing the Municipal Theatre and the Odeon. Patras’ famous Carnival, arguably the largest and most colorful in Europe, attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Rio Antirio Bridge

The largest bridge of its kind. This bridge is widely considered to be an engineering masterpiece. It is 2,880 meters long and connects the Peloponnese with the mainland, which previously could only be reached by ferryboat or via the Corinth Canal. The Bridge’s deck is considered the longest cable-stayed “suspended” deck of its type in the world. Its official name is the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge. He was a 19th century Greek Prime Minister, who suggested the idea of building a bridge between Rio and Antirio; however, the endeavour was too expensive at the time,

Metoxi lagoons

An area of exceptional natural beauty with wetlands offering rare eco systems of great scientific interest. There are also many fish farms. The lagoons are close to the forest of Strofilias, which stretches parallel to the beach of Kalogria, and is rich in flora and fauna. It is an area of varied scenery, where forest areas alternate with lagoons, lakes, canals and clearings.
